Depending upon the specialty you choose, the residency application process can be quite expensive. First of all, there are the non-refundable match registration fees:

  • National Match (NRMP) = $65 (avoid a late fee by registering on time)
  • SF Match (ophthalmology) = $100
  • AUA Match (urology) = $75
  • USMLE transcript = $80 (one-time fee)

Second, there are the costs of applying. Students will use the Association of American Medical Colleges’ ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) to submit an application. The 2015/2016 fee schedule is as follows:

  • ERAS registration and application token = free
  • Base fee for applying to up to 10 programs = $97
  • 11-20 programs = $11 per program
  • 21-30 programs = $16 per program
  • over 30 programs = $26 per program

The SF Match uses the CAS (Central Application Service). 2015/2016 fees are:

  • Base fee for applying to up to 10 programs = $60
  • 11-20 programs = $10 per program
  • 21-30 programs = $15 per program
  • 31-40 programs = $20 per program
  • 41+ = $35 per program

Finally, there is the cost of the interview process itself. This includes transportation, lodging, etc. On average, WU students spend $3,000 traveling to their interviews.
