Is USMLE Step 2 important for my residency application? When should I take Step 2?
The importance of USMLE Step 2 CK can vary depending on the applicant’s Step 1 score, specialty choice and residency programs they are interested in. In the case of an applicant who is not happy with the result of their Step 1 score, improvement on Step 2, could be very helpful. Those students need to take Step 2 early enough to allow it to be available for programs to review when they are considering whom to invite for interviews. In that case, Step 2, should be taken in September (at the latest), so the results will be back in time for review by the programs. For those satisfied with their Step 1 score, there may be some programs that will require Step 2 CK for ranking, the applicant will need to review the websites of those programs they are interviewing with to see if this is a requirement for ranking. It is estimated to take four weeks for scores to be returned after completion of the exam. At his point, no programs are requiring the CS score for ranking, but this could change and applicants need to be aware of that possibility.
